Casiotone For The Painfully Alone is one of those Songwriters that doesn't do the deepest lyrics, the widest ranges or the best singing. But thats what i love, his lyrics are frank, blunt stories of everyday life.
You have bands that are vast landscapes of music, with beautiful guitar and soaring vocals, Owen Ashworth is a monotone voice who gets to the point with his vocals, lyrics and chords. Not that i don't love large music, i am a big instrumental fan but his music is a change.
They are tiny songs that feel perfect on a mixtape, when you are riding on a train or bus after seeing a girlfriend who lives too far away.
If i had to be metaphorical, a band like Explosions In The Sky would be like falling through the clouds with no parachute but not caring, enjoying the scenery. CFTPA is an answering machine message from an ex girlfriend from 3 years ago, that just happened to be about how she thought you were being awkward at the cafe. But hoped to see you tomorrow after her friends party. It may seem like nothing to your friends, but to you it's a special memory, no matter how small and low key. You can hold it in your hand and take it with you.
This songs is actually a cover of one of the songs off his fourth album "Etiquette". After Twinkle Echo (arguably his best album) he knew he couldn't really top it with the style he was doing (That being songs done on Casiotone toy keyboards and 4 track recorders). So after that he went bigger with more instruments etc, not that i dislike that album but to me it's not what i love CFTPA as. But he was obviously either missing the old days, or wanted to give his old school fans a nice goodbye. He rerecorded New Years Kiss in an older style at home on a 4 track Cassette recorder, and what can i say, it's a beautiful goodbye to 3 amazing albums.
